Program Description

The Post-Graduation in Nursing at Work aims to provide nurses with their own skills that allow them to establish partnerships with workers/employers, with the aim of improving the health and safety of individuals in the workplace.
It is thus committed to professional differentiation, based on nursing knowledge, to develop healthier and more productive working environments, taking into account the quality standards of nursing care, without neglecting the multidisciplinary knowledge needed to interact within an occupational health team. In this sense, the training is goal-oriented, based on the worker's needs, with a focus on work and work environment (FOHNEU, 1995).

This course, being since the beginning accredited by the Directorate General of Health (2015), in order to give answers to the orientation no. 9/2014, which foresaw the need for recognition of specific skills in this area, has now been restructured, according to the Regulation no. 9/2014. No. 372/2018 - Differentiated Added Competence in Nursing at Work, being accredited by the Order of Nurses, for Professional Qualification purposes, with the attribution of 3.5 Professional Development Credits (CDP) and for access to the attribution of Differentiated Added Competence in Nursing at Work.

Objectives

The course aims to train Nurses at Work for:

  • manage the health of the worker or groups of workers through their empowerment and the promotion of healthy and safe working environments;
  • work within an occupational health team, contributing with their disciplinary vision to the integration of different levels of prevention, according to the characteristics of the workplace;
  • researching work contexts promoting health optimization, disease/accident prevention and health risk reduction.

Learning Outcomes

  • To demonstrate in-depth knowledge and a broader perspective on the history and theoretical models of Nursing at Work, as well as its contribution to the promotion of health in the workplace;
  • To be able to integrate contributions from management, ethics and labor law as essential foundations for clinical decision making;
  • To be able to integrate contributions from epidemiology, health planning and biostatistics to investigate health needs in work contexts;
  • Demonstrate knowledge about the different physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial agents associated with risks in the workplace;
  • To be able to manage and interpret in a systematic way information from different sources, for the analysis of complex situations related to people's health and nursing care in the work context;
  • To be able to structure an investigation protocol/intervention project taking into account the health needs sensitive to Nursing at Work;
  • Be able to communicate their diagnosis/projects/results to specialized audiences, using different forms of scientific dissemination.

Methodology

In the practical and theoretical-practical classes the active, interactive and collaborative methods will be privileged. In the internship component the focus will be on reflection about the skills developed.

The course works in person with the possibility that, in some classes, students can attend at a distance through the Collaborate Ultra platform.

Evaluation

The various course units will have an individualized evaluation.

The evaluation is diversified (exam, work, project, seminar, portfolio) but focused on the development of students' skills.

The course will also have an integral evaluation, where the students will be able to express the acquired knowledge and/or the developed competences, through the accomplishment of a scientific article and a communication or poster to be presented in the final seminar of the course.
