Clara Soares is a first-year nursing student at the School of Nursing (Porto) at Universidade Católica Portuguesa. She emphasizes that the early introduction of clinical placements is crucial for her development: “From the first year, we are exposed to real clinical settings, which allows us to grow as professionals from the outset.” In addition to her demanding academic journey, she dedicates time to volleyball training, a sport she has practiced for several years and considers essential for her physical and emotional well-being.
Why study at the School of Nursing (Porto) of Universidade Católica Portuguesa?
I chose the School of Nursing (Porto) because its curriculum is distinctive, particularly for its early start of clinical placements. From the first year, we have direct contact with real clinical environments, allowing us to develop as future healthcare professionals right from the beginning. This hands-on approach was a key factor in my decision. The training at Católica offers a strong foundation, both technically and personally, which gives me confidence for the future.
How important are clinical placements in the academic journey?
I have only completed my first-year placement so far, but it was a valuable and enriching experience. That initial contact helped me realize my strong interest in the medical-surgical field, which I may choose to explore further in the future.

However, I eventually realized that Nursing embodies a deeply humane profession with a direct impact on people's lives. I came to see it as a meaningful opportunity to fulfill my lifelong motivation: caring for and helping others.

As a volleyball athlete, I have been both a student and an athlete for some time, and I've learned how to manage my schedule between training and studying. The academic demands of higher education are very different from those in high school, and adapting to this change was a challenge. However, with good organization and resilience, I have been able to maintain a balance between my commitments.
What role does sports play in your life?
Sports have been a source of balance and relief for me. In addition to being a passion, they help me stay focused, disciplined, and both physically and mentally well.
